Barley Dosa - Breakfast Ideas

Hey everyone!! Wishing you all a very happy new year. But along with happiness, i wish you all a year that ushers in goodness, health and righteousness. Sadly, that seems to be need of the hour. Even though i wanted to launch myself into a fully loaded post on the small milestones that Tomato Blues reached in the past year, recent events truly blighted my spirits. For those of you all who are not associated with the law and its medium, recent events will mean sadness, grief and anger. But for a person who has studied it, it means failure of the system in a grand way. That s just what happened when the poor 23 year old died. What a waste of a glorious life. If i pause to think for a moment, my eyes well with tears and my blood boils in rage. I can only say that my milestones looked infinitesimally small and that i flinch everytime i hear a person talking about Anti rape laws. The need of the hour is not Anti Rape laws but a change in the way we all think. We all have to accept that a society is meant to be live in in harmony and for harmony to exist, its important to respect everyone. For, it is only in harmony, that love and trust can be nurtured. I shall not go on with my ranting any more. I shall stop here hoping that one day, the sooner the better, we all start respecting each other and harmony is born. Remember my dear friends, this is not about man or woman or child. Its all about learning to coexist peacefully.
Ending that note, i shall begin my due testimonies to all those talented women out there who can make breakfast in a jiffy. And i shall tip my hat off to all those women who do that on an every day basis without boring the daylights out of anyone.
I am the mediocre Indian home maker who dreads the thoughts of breakfast and who scurries around in the kitchen like a harried rat in the morning, desperate to please the tummy an yet at the same time, fulfill all the nutritional requirements. And one of those interludes of searching for the perfect breakfast, i stumbled upon Barley Dosa. Now, if someone would announce an award for the person most passionate about dosas, the winner hands down would be my Husband dearest. And true to his passion, this dosa was a runaway success at my home. So, you all trying?

Recipe For Barley Dosa
(Crepes made with barley and black gram dal)

Prep Time: Soaking 4 hours
           Grinding 20 mins
Cook Time: About 2 mins for a dosa
Makes about 20 dosas

What You Need?

Pearl Barley 3 cups
Husked whole black gram dal or husked whole urad dal 1 cup
Fenugreek seeds 1 tbsp

How To Make It?

Wash and soak the barley and the urad dal separately for about 4 to 5 hours. Add the fenugreek seeds to the urad dal while soaking.
Once soaked completely, drain the water from the both.
Now, grind the urad dal to a smooth consistency using a blender adding about 1/8 cup of water gradually. The urad dal must be ground just like grinding for idli or dosa.
Transfer the ground urad dal to a large container.
Now, grind the barley next in 3 batches adding about 1/4 cup of water in parts gradually. The barley must be ground smoothly and it took me about 4 mins for each batch. Barley unlike rice remains a lil grainy even after you grind it very smoothly. So no panic!
Once the barley is ground, add this to the ground urad dal. Add salt and mix well.
Leave for about 6 to 8 hours to ferment. This may take longer in case you live in cold places.
After about 8 hours or after the batter has fermented, mix well again.
Heat an iron skillet or girdle.
Pour a ladle full of the batter and spread into a thin circle starting from inwards and going outwards just like how you do for normal dosa.
Drizzle oil on the sides and cook till golden brown on one side.
Flip to the other side and cook for 30 secs more.

Once done, serve hot with any chutney of your choice.

On a lighter note, what can you expect at Tomato Blues in 2013? Well, this year will be focused and not random cooking for me. So maybe more of cakes, cookies, indian desserts, snacks and breads from me this year. Stay tuned. And of course, some main course too!
